§ 19-338. Exemptions to ambulances.

  • (a)

    The driver of an ambulance, when removing patients to or from a hospital or private residence may park or stand irrespective of city ordinances regulating the parking or standing of vehicles on the public streets.

    (b)

    The driver of an ambulance, when responding to an emergency call and displaying a red flashing emergency light, may exercise the privileges set forth in this section subject to the conditions herein stated:

    (1)

    Park or stand irrespective of the provisions of city ordinances regulating the parking or standing of vehicles on public streets.

    (2)

    Proceed past a red or stop signal or stop sign but only after slowing to a speed not in excess of ten (10) miles per hour.

    (c)

    This section shall not be construed to relieve the driver of an ambulance from the duty to drive with due regard for the safety of others, nor his employer from liability for the consequences of said driver's negligence. Nothing in this section shall be construed to authorize operating or driving an ambulance at a speed in excess of that which is permissible under city ordinances governing the speed of motor vehicles generally.
